That first sentence -- the bane of my existence. I think every author will tell you that a blank page is one of the most terrifying and intimidating aspect of writing. What do I fill this page with? What adventures will my words embark on? What meanderings will this idea take as it comes to fruition?

First sentences, truly, are something that I dread. The page itself doesn't intimidate me as much -- it's full of possibilities, a blank canvas upon which I can draw a picture out of words. But that very first sentence, it sets the tone for the rest of the page -- it's the key that unlocks the wardrobe that leads to Narnia. Just like a key, not every first sentence will fit. Some are just dead ends -- they fit, but they don't really turn the latch or open the door. Some don't have that magic that you need -- they open the door alright, but there's just coats and old, musty furs in there. Then sometimes, if you're very, very lucky, you get that one magical key -- it turns the lock and you open the door very slowly. A rush of cold air and the smell of winter snow hit you and you know -- you've got the right first sentence.

How do you find that first sentence? Well, that one is a mystery. It's just like sorting through a box of old keys, listening to them jangle together, picking out ones that look like they'll fit. Maybe you like it because it's shiny and new. Maybe you like it because it's older and rusty and looks like it would fit. Whatever reason you pick a key, you still have to test it out, wriggle it around, see if it will work. Sometimes, you sort through an entire box of keys, and don't find the right one. Then you have to wander away for a while, leave that cursor blinking on the screen, and find some more keys. Stare at some pretty scenery, run your fingers through your pet's fur, take a walk, talk to a friend. Find some more inspiration, and then return and see if any of the new keys open that wardrobe to Narnia. Or whatever your world is called.

Good luck finding your keys, my friends!
