Greetings and salutations, my friends, family, and readers! I had a different blog post I was going to do, but of course, the muse went and tugged me in another direction: playlists.
I listen to music while I write, and I curate playlists for specific characters or specific books. In the case of the Unbreakable series (my current marketing focus), I had a jumbled playlist that had songs from all five books on it. Just now, I went though and separated them into separate lists for separate books, at least for the trilogy. I’ll build Escapades and Empire of Dirt in a bit. I’ve shared the playlist under the synopsis for each book (or find it here), so if you want to go find the playlist and listen along while I explain each song, feel free! Or you can listen on your own time, whatever you want to do 🙂 Below, I outline the songs for The Curse, the first book in the series.
Euwenn’s Songs
Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me?
Honestly? This is just 100% Euwenn’s song. Listen to the lyrics closely and you’ll get a great picture of what Euwenn goes through.
Eye of the Tiger
This song talks about someone being on the streets, “just a man and his will to survive”, and it made me think of Euwenn, cast out from his family and living on the streets, but fighting to survive every step of the way. He’s the “last known survivor”, and he’s not giving up.
Free Bird Fly
This unique song by a little known German/Celtic band Omnia just gives me wistful Euwenn vibes. “You’re in pain”, “you’re insane”, “they beat you down, you get up” … it’s just a very Euwenn coded song. It’s a little witchy and a little spooky. I also chose it because Euwenn’s family is Irish, so the Celtic vibes really fit with Euwenn and who I want him to be.
Carry on Wayward Son
I mean … it’s kind of in the title? Euwenn is forced to carry on, with the hope that maybe, sometime, he’ll have peace.
Whatever It Takes
Whatever it takes, Euwenn will keep fighting. This is a song that kind of spans the entire series, and is part of the inspiration for Unbreakable – no matter what, Euwenn will fight and he will not break. (or will he?)
Human
This song also kind of spans the series, but is definitely a Euwenn song. It’s about the demands that are put on Euwenn because of how powerful he is. Often he just feels like he is just a kid, but life has thrust so much on him.
Rowan’s Songs
Stayin’ Alive
A key component of Rowan’s character is the fact that he is always dressed well. No matter the circumstances, he is ready to go with shined shoes and pressed slacks or dark jeans. “You can tell by the way he walks” that he knows he looks good. He’s not cocky, but he is dressed well and knows it.
Sharp Dressed Man
This is a quintessential Rowan song. He’s a sharp dressed man.
Other Songs
Highway to Hell
Mirabel, Rowan’s aunt, loves AC/DC. This song is a tribute to Mirabel, bless her ever-patient soul.
Some Nights
This song is included as a homage to the many nights that Euwenn stays up late, staring out into the darkness of the city, contemplating everything that has come before. Some nights are dark ones, and some nights are better.
Panic Room
Ahhhhh, this song! This song is dedicated to the ShadowGhast, a monster of my own creation that shows up about halfway through the book. The ShadowGhast feeds on magical energy and creates smoke monsters that surround you. When you read that section, listen to this song!
Wanted Dead or Alive
This song … it just has the right vibes. It’s a little bit Alabaster, since she’s hunted, but also a little bit Euwenn, because he’s also being hunted. Alabaster is out to get him, and by the end of the trilogy, it’s a question of whether or not she wants him dead or alive.
Sparks Fly
This song is a reference to “matched magic”, a concept that I created wherein two magic users can enhance each other’s magic almost telepathically. It’s not a “romantic” connection, it’s a purely magical connection. Although you never know what can happen…
Electric Touch
This song has a bit to do with the matched magic concept, and also is a reference to the relationship that develops by the end of the book. I won’t spoil it for you by saying anymore..
Evil Woman
I mean, our villainess is Alabaster, a witch turned evil. What else would I put down for her? 🙂
Well, that’s it for The Curse. I’m on vacation right now, so I’ll be back with another blog post probably once I’m home. Hope you enjoyed these lyrics and the playlist. If anything piqued your interest, feel free to shoot me a question. I really want to talk to you and get to know you and show you the world I’ve created.
Till later – stay silly! <3
