Mountain’s Lament
I am the mist that you see in her eyes
As she stares out across the cold winter skies.
I am the past that you read in her smile
As she shies from your arms and your love.
I am the cold hearted lover who never could hold her
Never could give her what she needed to live.
I left the scar on her heart and her soul.
I am the one you will never overcome.
I am the one who she dreams of at night.
You cannot hope to ever possess her:
She will never be free from my hold on her soul.
Whenever I call her, she always comes running:
Even if you’re the one holding her hand.
She lives in a dream world, hoping I’ll call her:
Despite all this time, her love is still strong.
My grip in her heart is as strong as new steel:
Each lover is measured against my memory.
I left my name on her memory and her lips.
I am the one she still loves--the one who is gone.
I am the one who she dreams of at night.
I am the dream that you see in her eyes
As she stares out across the warm summer fields.
I am the hope that you read in her smile
As she shies from your gifts and your promise.
I am the cold hearted lover who never could hold her
Never could give her what she needed to live.
I left the scar on her heart and her soul
I am the one you will never overcome
I am the one who she dreams of at night.
I have no name that she calls out in secret
Just the town where we first danced at dusk.
I have no form that she sees when you hold her
Just the roads we wandered at dawn.
I have no bed where we met, to be one
Just her soul-home behind a red gate.
She has no picture of me by her bedside
No way you can find my face in a crowd.
No man has broken her heart with the power
To leave such a scar as I have,
For the sound of my voice and an image of me
Is the dream that she sees at night.
I am the mountain you see in her eyes
as she stares out into dark forest trees.
I am appalachia that you read in her smile
As she shies from your arms and your live.
I am the cold hearted lover who never could hold her
Never could give her just what she needed to live.
I left the scar on her heart and her soul
I am the one she can’t live without.
I am the one who she dreams of at night.
Leave her alone, for she’ll never be free from me--
Never free to dance with another.
For someday I’ll call her home to Austin
Someday she’ll run to me
Someday she’ll leave you
Someday she won’t even look back.
Unless it could be
that you hear my voice;
that you wait for my call;
that you bear my scars;
that you will run with her to my side.
