Did You Read the News

For The Accident

Did you read the news today --

Did you see what’s in the paper?

I’d like to shed a tear, sir

But I’m afraid I don’t know their names

This world, it’s getting bigger

Despite that closed off feeling

We move too fast, nothing will last,

Did you read the news today --

Did you read what's in the paper?

Why bother to care, I hear you ask

When I don’t even know their names

This world it’s getting colder

Despite our efforts to warm it

With moving so fast that nothing lasts

No love to bring life back.

Did you read the news today

Do you hear these words I say?

You can’t tell me not to care

Because someone knew their names.

This world is getting murderous

Despite our vast protests

With moving so fast that nothing lasts

You will miss it when it’s gone.

Did you see the news tonight --

Did you see those flashing lights?

I will shed a tear

For now I do know their names

They walked and talked and loved, I hope

Cut down to black ink on white

Someone will miss them tonight.

But when the worst has had its say,

We find ourselves face to face

With empty hands and broken words

But no way to help at all.

We meet there in that moment --

That truth we try to hide

We are a human people

And we need each other’s love.

Did You Read the News was written for a family that was killed in a tragic accident between a semi-truck and an Amish buggy. The driver of the truck was blinded by the sunlight, and never saw the buggy until it was too late. This was my reaction, as I knew the driver of the truck.
